House Blackmont of Blackmont holds a sun-baked seat on the banks of the Torentine where the river cuts down out of the Red Mountains, and from that height they have warred against the marcher lords of the Stormlands for longer than the Citadel can well reckon. In the years before the Rhoynar came the Blackmonts wore crowns of their own; their last king, Benedict, was broken in Nymeria's War and sent to take the black at the Wall among the six kings the warrior queen chose to humble rather than to kill. They had also marched with House Yronwood against the upstart Martells, and lost twice over.
Their blazon they have kept since: a black vulture stooping with a pink infant in its claws on a field of yellow, a device so grim that even the heralds at King's Landing remember it. By the time of A Game of Thrones the house is led by Lady Larra Blackmont, who came to the capital in Prince Oberyn Martell's train with her daughter Jynessa, heir to Blackmont, and her young son Perros at her side; her other children were among the favourite hostages kept under Prince Doran's eye at the Water Gardens of Sunspear.
