House Banefort of Banefort is an ancient westerlands house sworn to Casterly Rock, its hall set in the dry hills of the western marches where the lords of the Rock and the Iron Islanders long contested the high country. The Baneforts are of First Men descent and claim the Hooded Man, a shadowed figure of the Dawn Age, as their founder; from him they took the black hooded man and fiery tressure they still bear. In the long twilight of the Age of Heroes they reigned as petty kings of the western hills, styled Hooded Kings, and the last of that line, King Morgon Banefort, made war upon Loreon I Lannister, King of the Rock, for twenty years before his thralls were broken and his crown set aside.
At the time of A Game of Thrones the house is held by Lord Quenten Banefort, who rode in Lord Tywin's host to the Trident and was taken by the northmen at the battle in the Whispering Wood. He spent the long years of the War of the Five Kings as a prisoner of Lord Jonos Bracken at Stone Hedge, freed only when the Brackens bent the knee to the Iron Throne after the Red Wedding; thereafter he was among the lords who escorted Lord Tywin's corpse from King's Landing back to Casterly Rock.
