Sunfyre the Golden was a mature dragon with scales of beaten gold and pink wing membranes, said in his prime to be the most beautiful dragon ever to fly. He was the mount of King Aegon II Targaryen and the pride of his rider's brief, ruinous reign.
At Rook's Rest in 129 AC, Sunfyre and Aegon ambushed Princess Rhaenys upon Meleys; in the slaughter that followed Meleys was killed, but Sunfyre was broken, a wing twisted, scales seared by Meleys's fire. Aegon was carried half-dead from the field. Sunfyre crawled away to Dragonstone, where he slew the wild dragon Grey Ghost and lingered, growing slowly mad from his wounds. He died not long after Aegon was poisoned in 131 AC, the king and his dragon outliving one another only by the space of a few months.
